Membrane Technology

Since the 1940’s, commercial ion exchange resins have been successfully applied to water treatment and other industrial processes. AQUA designs, builds and installs ion exchange equipment for a wide range of industrial applications, generally incorporating the ion exchange media in pressure vessels.

We produce systems for a broad range of construction standards, including high purity, sanitary, 3A and PMO, in a range of materials from stainless to plastic. You may select from standard water and wastewater treatment membrane systems or the exact engineered solution for your process or water needs.

 

Electro-Deionization

 

Chromatography

AQUA offers electro-deionization for producing Ultrapure water. The EDI unit uses ion-exchange membranes and resins with electric current to remove dissolved salts from water. AQUA offers Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) technology and systems for commercial liquid separation processes. SMB technology is an advanced chromatographic process that employs adsorbent media for separation of organic and inorganic compounds.

Manganese Greensand Filters

Filtration of turbidity is one of the simplest water conditioning processes, but often one of the most difficult to achieve. Two factors must be considered: the amount of turbidity to be removed and the size range of particles to be removed.

Manganese greensand iron filters have the unique ability to remove both soluble and insoluble iron from water. These filters are used when hardness is low or when removal by ion exchange is not practical. Under special conditions, this iron filter can also remove manganese and hydrogen sulfide.

Our experience in designing and building membrane systems goes back 30 years and covers all membrane technologies developed to date, including RO, NF, UF and MF. We are also a leader in new membrane technologies, such as pervaporation.

Chromatography

Our SMB systems allow production scale separation processes to be continuous with high product purity and recovery. The SMB process is being used in small to large industrial scale production (columns up to 5 meters in diameter) to produce a variety of high purity products. Our chromatography technology may be used for pharmaceutical, sweetener, agrichemical, biotechnology, functional food and health product, and beverage applications, to name just a few.

AQUA Innovations offers Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) and Simultaneous Simulated Moving Bed (SSMB ) technology for commercial liquid separation processes. The technology is being used in small to large scale production (up to 5 meters in diameter) to produce a variety of high purity products.

With typical feedwaters of less than 30 NTU of turbidity the multimedia filters will, on the average, provide filtration down to a minimum NTU value of 1.0 and particulate size on the range of 5-10 microns.

Filter Performance
Filters are susceptible to peak and varying conditions, such as increased flow demand on parallel operating units when one of the units is removed from service for backwash. Effluent turbidity leakages under peak and varying conditions must be addressed and evaluated for each application.

Filter Performance
Manganese greensand iron filters have the unique ability to remove both soluble and insoluble iron from water. These filters are used when hardness is low or when removal by ion exchange is not practical. Under special conditions, this iron filter can also remove manganese and hydrogen sulfide. Between a pH of 6.2 and 8.8 the manganese greensand filters can typically reduce iron and manganese, excluding colloidal or chelated forms, to a level of 2% of the influent amount or 0.1 ppm, Fe, whichever is greater.

Filter Loading
Mn and soluble Fe are oxidized and precipated by either a) contact with the higher oxides of Mn on the greensand granules or b) reaction with the oxiding chemicals added to the feed water. All precipitates are then filtered and removed by backwashing. Loading is determined from the combined concentration of Fe + Mn in the feed water and the choice of regeneration method.
